Medicare Supplement Insurance
Medigap plans that fill coverage gaps in Medicare.
Typical cost: $100 – $400 per month
Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)
Medicare Supplement policies fill gaps in Original Medicare coverage—deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments that Medicare beneficiaries would otherwise pay out of pocket. Medigap is only available to those enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B.
Standardized Plans
Medigap policies are standardized by letter (A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, N). Each letter offers the same coverage regardless of insurer, but premiums vary. Plans C and F aren't available to new Medicare beneficiaries after 2020.
What's covered
Medicare Part A Coinsurance
Covers hospital coinsurance and costs up to 365 days after Medicare ends.
Medicare Part B Coinsurance
Covers the 20% coinsurance for doctor visits and outpatient care.
Part A Deductible
Covers the hospital deductible Medicare requires.
Part B Excess Charges
Some plans cover charges exceeding Medicare-approved amounts.
Foreign Travel Emergency
Most plans cover 80% of emergency care during foreign travel.
Tips
- • Enroll during your Medigap Open Enrollment (6 months starting at 65)
- • Plan G often best value now that F isn't available for new enrollees
- • Plans are standardized—compare premiums for identical coverage
- • Consider rate increase methods: attained-age vs issue-age vs community-rated
- • Medigap doesn't include drug coverage—you need separate Part D
